Flaubert once uttered, earnestly, “Ils sont dans le vrai.” We are in the truth.

I have encountered this phrase a great deal when I read.

My website is in part, a reading blog in which I react to what I read, as publicly as I can muster. But it is also in part a journey of me, in real time, exploring why dans le vrai shows up so much in what I read. It is me, a non-academic layperson, a casual literary enthusiast, trying to see how far I get in making sense of this phrase, and how it has reflects within the works of 20th century authors (and beyond).

And in turn, maybe I’ll figure out a little something about myself. Just kidding. I’m pretty self-actualized; I really just want to know what dans le vrai means. ::shrug emoji::
